DEACON VERNON A. AIKEN was the son of the late Fred and Clementine James. Vernon was born on February 22, 1933 in Islandton, South Carolina. Vernon entered into eternal rest on January 25, 2023 at the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Warriors Walk) in Columbia, South Carolina.
Deacon Aiken attended public schools in Brooklyn, New York. He was a deacon, a member of the Senior Choir and also a lead singer in the male chorus at Green Hill. He enjoyed working in his yard, singing in the church choir and fishing. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean War as a truck driver from 1951 to 1953 and served honorably. He worked as a Longshoreman at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. He also worked many years as a personal chauffeur for a Long Island businessman. He finished his working career as a maintenance worker for an apartment complex on Long Island. He retired and moved to South Carolina.
Deacon Aiken was preceded in death by his parents and eleven of his twelve siblings. He leaves to cherish his memory: his sister, Hortense Edwards of Camden, South Carolina; his daughters, Sharon Aiken of Covington, Georgia; René Arthur of Brooklyn, New York; Julisa Terry of Lugoff, South Carolina and his son, Sean Robinson of Virginia; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family friends and his dear friend, Annie Hampton, all of whom will miss him dearly.
