Mrs. Nettie Mae Jones-LeGrand-Hubbard was born on March 10, 1941, in Camden, S.C. She gained her angel wings on March 16, 2024, at the age of 83. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Lewis Henry Jones Sr. (Associate Pastor of White Oak Baptist Church 1945 – 1980) and the late Mrs. Ellen Cooke-Jones.
Nettie received her early religious training and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at White Oak Baptist Church where she was baptized. Under her father’s tutelage, Nettie served diligently as she learned about the church’s history, by-laws, general church business, and most importantly biblical principles.
Nettie attended the public schools of Kershaw County and was a proud graduate of Jackson High School’s Class of 1959. After high school, Nettie moved to Connecticut where she worked several jobs and held various positions. In Connecticut Nettie met and married Mr. Thomas LeGrand Sr. From this union, two sons were welcomed: Mr. Thomas LeGrand Jr. (Predeceased) and Mr. Michael LeGrand.
After several years of living in the north and after the death of her husband, Nettie returned to S.C. and was employed at the U.S. Post Office until she retired. While back in S.C., Nettie was blessed to meet and marry 1st Sgt. Clarence Hubbard who also preceded her in death.
Nettie was an advocate for continuous learning, so there were no surprises when she decided to continue her education by majoring in Business Administration at Midlands Technical College in Columbia S.C. She supported Veterans by volunteering countless hours at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Medical Center where she also served as an advocate for Disabled Veterans under the D.A.V Project in Columbia, S. C.
Mrs. Nettie was a fierce soldier on the front-line who never backed down from a challenge. There was absolutely nothing going on in the schools, in the workplace, in the political arena, in the church, in the community or in her neighborhood that she didn’t mind voicing her opinion about or standing up for. Sometimes she stood together with others... sometimes she stood alone but she was never ever afraid to make a stand. She was a proud member of the NAACP who took pride in advocating for the rights of ALL people near and far.
In Nettie’s spare time and as her health permitted her to do so, she loved: socializing, cooking, traveling, and gardening. She also loved her church and will be remembered for the many years she was able to joyfully organize anniversary events, special programs and fund raisers for the benefit of White Oak Baptist Church in honor of her father’s legacy.
Nettie will be remembered for her fearless personality, her work ethics, her sense of humor, her sharp style of dress, and her regal presence.
Those left to cherish her memories are her son, Michael LeGrand of Columbia, S.C.; one granddaughter, Ms. Shambra A. LeGrand of Columbia, S.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Eva Mae Crosby of New Rochelle, N.Y., Mrs. Amelia Reed of Elgin, S.C., and Mrs. Jessie Jackson of Camden, S.C.; one sister-in-law, Mrs. JoAnn Jones of Camden, S.C.; one brother-in-law, Mr. James Reed of Elgin, S.C.; best friend and classmates: Mrs. Edna Smith, Mrs. Octavia Wilson, and Mrs. Mabel Allen, all of Camden, S.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Nettie was preceded in death by five siblings, Mr. Lewis H Jones Jr., Mrs. Louise Shepperd, Mrs. Sally Shavers, Mrs. Fanny Mae Smalls, and Mrs. Ora Lee Jackson.
