James Cabbagestalk

James Cabbagestalk Jr. was born March 4, 1935 in Mechanicsville, South Carolina to the late James Cabbagestalk Sr. and the late Alice Brunson Cabbagestalk Porter. He was educated in Lee County public schools and later completed trade school to become a brick mason.
Mr. Cabbagestalk was baptized at Tenth Street Baptist in Washington, DC and later returned to his home church Mt. Zion UMC in Bishopville SC. There he served in various ministries within the church including Trustee, Lay Servant, Nominations, United Methodist Men, and the Men's Choir. He had a deep baritone voice and could frequently be heard leading the choir acapella and at home as he worked around the house or in his garden. His favorite song was "If You're Talking About Jesus". He loved working in the church, particularly on various building projects and helping to maintain the church. At the request of his Pastor and trustees, Brother Cabbagestalk laid the brickwork for the Mt. Zion church sign.
He married Minnie Lee Reddick on October 8, 1955. He was a devoted husband of 64 years and the father of 8 children. He completed a bricklayer apprenticeship in Washington, DC and became a skilled brick mason. He served as construction foreman and successfully completed many building projects in the Washington, DC and Midland South Carolina areas. Mr. Cabbagestalk enjoyed old school TV shows and sports, especially wrestling, baseball, and football and was a big fan of the Washington Redskins. He loved gardening and took pride in growing all kinds of vegetables in his vegetable garden. As the patriarch of the family, he was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He was a hard worker and instilled that same work ethic in his children.
He is survived by daughters: Janice Cabbagestalk, Carrie Cabbagestalk, Deborah Cabbagestalk, Althea (Alvin) Belton; sons, Allan (Regina) Cabbagestalk, Anthony (Crystal) Cabbagestalk, Corey Cabbagestalk, Thomas Cabbagestalk; siblings: John (Bertha) Cabbagestalk and Joseph Cabbagestalk, 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, in-laws: Gladys Cabbagestalk, Andrew Reddick, Helen Wilson, John Reddick, Shirley Scott, Ervin Reddick Jr, Thomas (Jacqueline) Reddick, Richard (Marjorie) Reddick, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Minnie Cabbagestalk, a sister: Betty Jean Missouri, and brothers: Edward Cabbagestalk, Troy James Cabbagestalk, Henry Cabbagestalk, and Ernest Cabbagestalk, in-laws: Rose Cabbagestalk, Ethel Reddick, Mary Reddick, Ettie Belle Tate, Mary Bracey and Jean Reddick, Jesse Reddick, Jerome Reddick, Rochelle Reddick, Roosevelt Scott and Harvey Lee Wilson.
