Helen Mildred Craig Allen

June 28, 1933 — July 29, 2020

Mrs. Helen (Mildred) Craig Allen was born 28 June 1933 in Camden, SC to the late Nick Craig and Ethel L White. She was the youngest of four children. Two sisters, Osbe and Margaret, and one brother, Nick Jr., preceded her in death.

Mildred attended public schools in Camden and graduated from Jackson High School. She worked for many years at Whitaker Drug Store. In 1954 she married the love of her life, the late Henry F. Allen Sr., and traveled the US for 28 years as a devoted Air Force Wife before coming back home and settling down in Sumter, SC.

Mildred grew up in the church at Mt Sinai and was known for her singing voice. Many referred to her as Craig, The Singing Lady, which she loved! While she traveled extensively, she never forgot her home church. Picking up where she left off, she started singing as soon as she moved back to South Carolina. For the next 40 years she served as the Choir Leader, President of the Missionary Society, and Mother of the Church.

Mildred was a wonderful wife and an outstanding mother who loved to attend church, sing, and bake her coveted German Chocolate cake. She was a seasoned bingo player and always shared her winnings with others. Another of her favorite pastimes was listening to or watching her beloved Atlanta Braves. One of her fondest memories was attending the Braves vs Cubs game with her son in Chicago. Mildred adored her two grandchildren and spent as much time as she could with them. We will always remember her big smile, her kindness, her huge heart, and her ability to uplift others with an encouraging word or a special song.

After a long battle with Alzheimer's, Mildred transitioned to eternal life on 29 July 2020. The last song she sang a month ago was "I'm Alright Now." She will always be deeply cherished by her son, Henry (Hank) F. Allen Jr. and his wife Iva of Kildeer, IL; two grandchildren, Derek and Olivia, both of Kildeer, IL; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bethea; a host of cousins and other loving relatives and dear friends.

My mom's favorite scripture was Matthew 25:21, "Well done thou good and faithful servant." There is no doubt that is how God welcomed her home. Mom, your loving and kind spirit will live forever in the hearts and lives of all who loved and knew you.

A special note of thanks to Thomasenia Robinson (Iva's sister) for caring for Mildred during her final two years like she was her own mother. You were truly a blessing.
