Eugene Lane

April 6, 1936 — September 30, 2022

Eugene Lane, 86, went to be with the Lord and Savior on Thursday September 29, 2022.

Eugene was born in Charleston County South Carolina to the late James Grady Herndon and Sadie Elizabeth Thigpen Hart Herndon. He was raised by the late Jack C. Lane and Dora Stanley Lane of Walterboro.

He was preceded in death by his late wife, Ida Alice Pate Lane; daughters, Terry Marie Lane and Sherry Genia Lane (Infant); brothers, James Britton Herndon (Nancy), Albert Ernest Herndon, Paul Leland Herndon (Joan), Jack Moody Herndon, James Grady Herndon Jr. (Faye), Errol Jennings Herndon (Judy), John Willie Hart (Miriam), and Robert Michael Hart (Peggy); sisters, Ethel Mae Hart Castellands (David), Mildred Herndon Tisdale (John), Rhoda Herndon Haynes (Jerry), Mary Mildred Herndon, Dorothy Caroline Herndon, and Naomi Irene Herndon Maynard (Calvin).

He is survived by sisters, Miriam Herndon White (James), Nancy Herndon Moore (Jack), and Sadie Mae Herndon Sprague (Fred); granddaughters, Jessica Spires and Britney Crosby.

Eugene was a private man of faith and a member of several churches over his lifetime and loved to read his bible. He served his country and is a veteran of the U. S. Navy. He was retired from Dayco Products.

He loved his faithful furry companion Missy his Chihuahua. He would often refer her as being the Mayor or Sheriff of Hendersonville based on her disposition that day.

We are very grateful for Eugene’s best friends, Ed Hughes and wife Mitty Hughes. Eugene and Ed’s relationship began at Dayco Products. After some time of knowing each other, they became best friends. Ed and Mitty were there when Eugene needed an ear or a hand and took him to do his errands around town. Without them we would not have been with Eugene through the last few months of his life. It is comforting to know that Eugene had Ed and Mitty in his life.
The family wants to give special thanks to his neighbor and friend, Mayme Carter for the special help she provided Eugene in his later years of life. They also wanted to thank the Salem Methodist Church for their support and Tamika Dole with SCDSS for her help with Eugene.

A private graveside service at Dorchester Cemetery, Dorchester South Carolina will be held at a later date and time.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Salem Methodist Church, 7099 Hendersonville Hwy, Walterboro, SC 29488, SPCA of Walterboro or MUSC Hospice.
